plantation land series
In March, 2011 Rob Simmons was asked to travel to Alabama with SUREFF, an organization whose mission it is to foster eco-tourism and economic development in the rural communities of Alabama's Black Belt. The tour started in Gee's Bend then proceeded to Montgomery and Selma. “The historical links from Gee's Bend's plantation past is inescapable,” Simmons notes. “I felt a deep connection to this place, a connection that allowed me to revisit long forgotten images from my childhood.” The images in this series reflect that connection and, in some respect, act to create striking visual memories.
